چکیده

Substorms are a fundamental phenomenon in planetary magnetospheric systems. Using Cassini measurements, we report typical event which four successive dipolarization fronts (DFs) were observed within 1 hour during the substorm Saturn's magnetotail. The last three DFs caused type of stepwise electron acceleration and generated energetic electrons. pitch angle distributions electrons show evidence Fermi mechanism behind these DFs. Therefore, infer magnetotail dynamics process substorm: by powerfully accelerates field-aligned generates These high-energy injected into inner magnetosphere become an important trigger aurora. Our results efficient for confirm source particles Saturn, findings improve our understanding dynamics.

Two states of magnetotail dipolarization fronts: A statistical study

We study the ion density and temperature in the predipolarization and postdipolarization plasma sheets in the Earth's magnetotail using 9 years (2001-2009) of Cluster data. For our study we selected cases when Cluster observed dipolarization fronts (DFs) with an earthward plasma flow greater than 150km/s. We perform a statistical study of the temperature and density variations during the DF cro...

Electron dynamics during substorm dipolarization in Mercury’s magnetosphere

We examine the nonlinear dynamics of electrons during the expansion phase of substorms at Mercury using test particle simulations. A simple model of magnetic field line dipolarization is designed by rescaling a magnetic field model of the Earth’s magnetosphere. The results of the simulations demonstrate that electrons may be subjected to significant energization on the time scale (several secon...

Cross-tail current evolution during substorm dipolarization

We examine evolution of the cross-tail current during substorm current disruption/dipolarization using observations from two satellites in the near-Earth magnetotail at the downtail distances of 8–9RE. By choosing times when these two satellites are separated, mainly in the north–south distance in the tail current sheet, precise determination of current density in the layer embedded between the...

Magnetic dipolarization with substorm expansion onset

[1] We compare the timing and spatial extent of dipolarization with auroral breakup by using magnetic field data (1-min time resolution) from GOES 8 and GOES 9 and global auroral images (37-s frame rate) from the Polar ultraviolet imager. We survey the entire year of 1997 data and obtain 32 unambiguous dipolarization events that had ionospheric footprints within 2 hours in magnetic local time (...

Magnetotail energy dissipation during an auroral substorm

Violent releases of space plasma energy from the Earth's magnetotail during substorms produce strong electric currents and bright aurora. But what modulates these currents and aurora and controls dissipation of the energy released in the ionosphere? Using data from the THEMIS fleet of satellites and ground-based imagers and magnetometers, we show that plasma energy dissipation is controlled by ...
